Democracy is a form of government where all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy lets these citizens participate equally - either directly (this is known as a 'direct' democracy) or through representatives in government (this is called 'representative' democracy) - in law-related work.
The term itself originates from the Greek demos (people) and kratos (power, rule). Hence, democracy means 'rule by the people'. The Greeks invented this system in the 5th century BC for use in its city-states (Athens, Sparta, Crete etc.)
Eternia, as a nation, uses representative democracy. This is the system where there are people in government who carry the laws from people to government.
A democratic government has a very large spectrum of ideas, left- or right-winged. This can go from one person holding power (monarchy etc.) to a small number (few) of individuals (oligarchy, in this case).
Democracy was first thought up in about 500 BC by a man called Cleisthenes in the Greek city-state of Athens. Athenian democracy used the 'direct' form and was quite different to our democracy. Women, slaves, foreigners, and males under the age of 20 could not vote.
Only about 15 percent of the residents of Athens were citizens. This was probably due to the ancient understanding of citizenship. In Athenian democracy, it was very direct as the people controlled the Athenian political system.
In the UK, over 1500 years after Athenian democracy, the Magna Carta was written in 1215 (AD) to control and limit the power of kings and 50 years later, the first Parliament was organized to talk about the king's power and recent behaviour.
In 1789, Revolutionary France adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen and then the National Convention in 1792. In 1848, universal male suffrage was started in France too.
In the US constitution, 1788, government and rights for some were given. Pre-1776, in the colonial period, there were many factors that people were required to meet in order to vote (e.g. no women, slaves, black people).
The World War I, about 150 years after the US constitution, caused new countries to be formed, most of them at least nominally democratic.
In World War II, the democratic system was changed to include occupied Germany. However, a lot of people in Eastern Europe became the USSR, ruled from Russia (until 1991).
